Mortimer has brought this strange legend to Holmes because Sir Charles Baskerville has recently died under what appear to be equally strange circumstances: his heart gave out while running from something. Both now agree that Stapleton is the man responsible for Sir Charles’ death and the threat to Sir Henry’s life. He only wanted to make Sir Henry and Jack Stapleton believe that he would be gone, so that Stapleton would feel emboldened enough to attempt to murder Sir Henry.
